Angelina Jolie is back with a role that is rejected by her action-packed filmography as Maria Callas, one of the most revered opera singers of the 20th century. Maria, a biographical drama against the melancholic elegance of Paris of the 1970s, will premiered on Lionsgate Play on May 9th.

Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film follows the turbulent last years of Callas’ life and offers insights into their private struggles and the intensive pressure, which was accompanied by global fame. Callas became known as La Divina and was celebrated and checked – a woman whose voice and persona fascinated the audience, whose personal battles often remained behind the curtain.

In this rare comeback role, Jolie Callas embodies with a reluctance that speaks volumes. The film avoids a conspicuous melodrama and instead paints a quieter, intimate portrait of the soprano, shaped by loneliness, failure and desperate wish to be understood beyond the stage lights.

In an interview (via Voicetube), Jolie revealed how deep she connected with Callas. One of the most moving insights in the film includes the declining vision of Callas. Jolie remembered that the opera legend was almost legally blind later in life, and due to performance expectations, she had to memorize whole operas instead of wearing glasses on stage – a quiet evidence of her resistance.

In contrast to conventional musical biopics, Maria is not concentrated by performance figures. It is a reflection on identity, loss and the emotional costs of the brilliance. Jolie’s understated, intensive and human representation invites the audience to consider Callas not only as an icon, but as a woman who tries to assert herself in a world that required perfection.

Maria begins to stream on Lionsgate Play on May 9th. Regardless of whether you are an opera fan or are simply put on by character-controlled cinema, this is worth a watch.
